General Hospital Lagos is the first General Hospital in Nigeria and it has served the community for 110 years.
This premier hospital was established in 1893 to serve the British Army. At the inception of the hospital, services available included medicine,surgery and obstetrics and gynaecology. The Obstetrics and Gynaecology department of the hospital was later moved to Massey Street(Ita Eleiye) where most prominent Lagosians were born. This movement was done to create room for other medical specialties within the hospital complex.

During the Nigerian Indepedence on the 1st of October 1960, the hospital was handed over to the Federal government and upon the creation of Lagos State on the 27th of May 1967 the hospital was handed over to the Lagos State Government which till date manages the Hospital under the Lagos State Hospitals Management Board (L.S.H.M.B).It is a 250-bed Hospital with facilities for various disciplines. It basically caters for surgical and medical cases.

General Hospital Lagos has served as a training centre for a lot of prominient doctors, pharmacists, nurses, radiographers, technologists etc. People like late Professor Olikoye Ransome Kuti, Dr. Majekodunmi, Dr. Andrew Blair Aitkem who died in Nigeria in 1935. Others are Dr. Awoliyi, Dr.(Mrs.) Abimbola Awoliyi, Dr. Odeku, Dr. Ore Falomo, Dr. Shodipo, Dr. Ajose Williams, Dr. Leke Pitan, Dr. Ekemode etc.
