EMERGENCY SERVICE (LASEMS)

LASEMS is the accident and emergency unit of the hospital. It was commissioned on 17th April 2000 with 4 doctors, 10 nurses and ambulances.
At inception, it incorporated:

1. A Mobile Emergency Unit: Charged with on-scene resuscitation and evacuation of victims from accident or incident site to the hospital. The ambulances are located in strategic places in Lagos and its environs viz on the highways, Third Mainland Bridge, Epe, Ajah Road etc.

2. A Hospital-Based Intensive Care Unit: Continues resuscitation and provides definitive management before admission of the patients into the main wards of the hospital. The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) has taken over the role of the mobile unit.

In accordance with the state government's policy on health, patients are treated free of charge in the first 24 hours.

The unit has rendered free services to the critically injured victims of the inter-ethnic clashes in ajegunle, idi-araba and Lagos-Island, victims from kerosine explosion in year 2001, victims of mass accidents on Ikorodu road and Imota and bomb blast victims at Idumagbo to mention just a few.
The work force now comprises of two consultants anaesthetists, seven medical officers, sixteen nurses (with accident and emergency) experience, four administrative staff and four attendants.
