NURSING

The Department of nursing has been in existence since the inception of General Hospital Lagos. Nurses work 24 hours daily, rendering care to in and out-patients. There are 13 wards and 10 clinics with a total of 243 beds. There are 3 operating theatres with 2 suites in each and 1 casualty department for emergency cases.

The Nursing department at inception was under the colonialists and the first Nigeria Chief Nursing Officer in charge of General Hospital Lagos was Mrs. Oguntolu, she handed over to Mrs Gomez-Giwa-Osagie when she was called upon to set up the Nursing department at LUTH. Since then, 11 other Chief Nursing Officers have been in charge of the department. They are Mrs.Etim, Mrs. Okoro, Mrs Etim (again) Mrs. Ekpelle, Mrs Bada, Mr Scott, Mrs Soyege, Mrs. Akintomide, Mrs Onagoruwa, Mrs Omosebi and presently Mrs E.T. George.

The Hierarchical order of the Nursing department is as given below.
Staff Nurse—› Midwife —› Nuring Sister—› Senior Nursing Sister —› Matron —› Assistant Chief Matron—› Chief Matron.
Each promotion is done after the Nurse must have gone through the process of Interview and recommendations. This is usually within an interval of three years.

The Nurses uniform has changed over the years from stripped purple with white collar and purple belt to puple without collar and purple belt for the staff Nurse Midwife then to white with purple belt and then to white without belt and galipot-like cap.The change in uniform affects all the cadres.


At present, the total number of Nurses in the hospital is 217 and they are distributed to the wards and clinics. 6 nurses are on secondment to State House Clinic 4, Motherless Babies Home 1, New Town Development Authority Clinic 1.

Hours of duty – Nurses run 3 shifts daily
Morning shift : 7am – 2pm
Afternoon shift: 2pm-7pm
Night Shift: 7pm-7am

There are Nurses who are specialised in certain areas of the profession such as Administration, Ophthalmic, Paediatric, Peri-Operative Nursing, ENT, and Anaesthesias etc. The Nursing department is known to render care and carry out procedures as is deemed necessary. Examples of such are: handling and taking over of wards and patients. Total and wholistic care of the patients. Care of Hospital Equipments and periodic inventory check. etc.

In the past, the laundry department was under the Nurses, they took the stock of available linen and see to their distribution.

The orderlies also were under the Nurses and they do their duty rosters. Nurses worked in the pharmacy to see to the distribution of drugs to the wards either common drugs, schedule drugs or DDA and mixtures.

At present, Nurses perform their professional duties mostly and they should be encouraged and made comfortable while at work.

Provision of light snacks e.g Biscuits, Beverages etc is suggested fo Nurses on duty as it used to be. Food warmers or cookers can be provided for those who bring food from home to keep it warm.

Provision of camp Beds for Nurses on Night duty to observe their break for they are entitled to 2 hours break on Night shift.

Provision of drugs for sick staff and the maintenance of same to be sure it is available when they are actually needed.

Maintenance of available Hospital equipment and regular supply of consumables to improve the working environment.

As Nurses, we promise to maintain the required standard of Nursing care to achieve the desired healthy populace of our state.

We hold monthly meetings in the department to rub minds, point out mistakes and make corrections, as necessary.

Monthly Continuing Medical Education Lecture also holds in rotation among the different wards and clinics to educate us in new trends in nursing practice.

Nurses have a welfare committee and contribution to see to our welfare, we rejoice with those that rejoice and mourn with those that mourn. We also reward outstanding Nurses and give parting gifts to those posted out of the hospital or those retiring from service.
