Because of the patient load, the unit has graduated into a department-Orthopaedic. We presently have 4 trained orthopaedic nurses and at least 2 others undergoing training presently. We treat all orthopaedic and trauma conditions.
The orthopaedic and trauma unit was first started in this hospital in may 1995 when thw first orthopaedic surgeon was employed by LSHMB and posted to the hospital. The unit has grown tremendously since then with a compliment of two consultant orthopaedic and trauma surgeons.
