Project Initiative was initiated by some members of the community (3) who at a point in time had their relative admitted to the hospital. They were very impressed with the services the hospital rendered ranging from Medical care and attention given, utmost hospitality offered and the commitment of the members of staff concerned at all levels. Even though the patient died as a result of her ailment, her relatives were convinced that with an improved and better working environment, she would have survived. With this, the patient's relatives thought about what could be done to improve on the hospital facilities.It was then suggested that a committee is formed which would deliberate on how this goal can be achieved.

A nine-man committee was formed which comprised of the three (3) Project Initiators and six (6) staff of the hospital, including the Medical Director. As headway, the committee recognised that the Lagos State Government with over fifteen thousand inhabitants, majority of whom are in need of Government supported healthcare service, cannot adequately fund the hospital needs. Thus, the committee decided that the general public and private establishments should be involved by making donations to the hospital in form of equipments, refurbishment of infrastructures, provision of materials needed in the hospital (bed sheets, hospital beds, etc), training of staff to acquire some skill in fields such as Information Technology, Drugs Administration, e.t.c.

A list of the hospital's numerous needs was drawn out and a letter of appeal was drafted and sent to over 80 establishments and individuals in the state. Along the line, the committee discovered that it is precisely 110 years since the inception of the hospital and then, the project was dedicated to the celebration of the 110 years Anniversary of the hospital. Thus the name PROJECT INITIATIVE - GENERAL HOSPITAL LAGOS AT 110 (GHL @ 110).
